Well, according to Wikipedia:
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.

Website Promotion
Increasing the traffic to your website involves much more than just submitting your site to search engines. There are many things you can do to help lead new visitors to your site:
- Distribute your "URL" or website address.
- Make sure that your website is clearly represented on all of your marketing materials, your business cards, advertisements, even your product. By putting your website address on your product it makes it easier for your customer to inquire about future purchases.
- Create a Links Page and Exchange Links with businesses that relate to your field.
- A Links Page is a great way to increase your exposure in Search Engine Results. As the Search Spiders crawl web pages, they follow every link that is included in the site. If your website address is included on a Links Page from partnering company, then the Spider will follow your URL to your site...and begin to index your site. The more a Spider can crawl and index your site, the better your exposure.
- Respond Quickly.
- Most site visitors lose interest if it takes too long for the business to respond to a question or comment that may have been sent via email. At the very least, make sure you set up an Auto-Responder so the site-visitor knows you received the email.
- Update Your Website Regularly
- Visitors to your website want to see new and fresh ideas. Review your website regularly to make sure that the information on your site isn't stale or outdated.
